As a pre-natal Episcopalian, The Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle was born in St. Petersburg, Florida in August of 1961. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church and attended Canterbury School, St. Thomas’ parish day school, through eighth grade. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School, Duke University (B.A. in Public Policy) and the University of Florida, College of Law (J.D.). Fr. Dunkle married Cathleen Brooke of Jacksonville in May, 1987, practiced law in Lakeland, Florida with Holland and Knight for several years and later moved to Jacksonville to continue his practice at Rogers, Towers, eventually becoming partner and co-chairman of the Litigation Department. After 15 years of practicing law, he experienced a very un-welcomed call to the priesthood which he actively fought for three years. After a come-to-Jesus Sunday church experience while on vacation at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Helena (Napa Valley), California, he stopped the fight, moved his wife and two daughters (then 7 and 9) to New York City to attend The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, and was ordained to the deaconate and priesthood in 2004 at St. John’s Cathedral, Jacksonville, Florida. Following ordination, Fr.
Dunkle accepted the call to be Canon to the Ordinary (akin to the “Chief of
Staff” for the bishop) in the Diocese of Florida. During this particular time
of “transition” in the diocese, some found it difficult to remain Episcopalians
and Fr. Dunkle assisted the diocese through the controversy. In 2006, after
Grace Episcopal Church, Orange Park (a suburb of Jacksonville) experienced all
but 35 of its 1,000 members leave the Episcopal Church, he became their rector
in late 2006, excited about the challenge of re-building an Episcopal Church. |
